A couple died yesterday when a car ferrying miraa to Nairobi hit a motorbike on the Embu-Makutano road in Kirinyaga county. Francis Wanyoike and his wife Jane Wangari were headed to Murubara in Mwea on the way to their rice field when the speeding Probox smashed the motorcycle.
The Probox was heading to Nairobi from Embu. Witnesses said the Probox rammed into the motorcycle as it tried to overtake a lorry. It had given the motorcycle rider a leeway to branch towards the rice fields. “The Probox driver was trying to overtake the lorry,” said one resident.
Mwea East OCPD Titus Yoma said the number of people who were in the Probox is yet to be established. The wreck of the Probox rolled several metres off the road. The driver of the Probox escaped before his car was set on fire by angry residents. He got away by hitching a ride on another vehicle that was transporting miraa via the same road. The mob destroyed the miraa worth thousands of shillings, while some looted the product. Tebeere MCA Gudson Muchina visited the scene and condemned the speeding driver.
He said miraa transporters violate traffic guidelines by speeding. Muchina called on the Traffic Department to take action against the offenders. “It’s only yesterday that another person was seriously injured when hit by the same speeding miraa vehicles,” he said. Muchina urged traffic officers to be tough on motorists whose vehicles do not have speed governors. He said miraa transporters have for a long time been flouting traffic rules.
The residents warned that they will take the law into their own hands and burn speeding vehicles ferrying miraa. Yoma said police have launched investigations into the cause of the accident. He said Wanyoike was a primary school teacher. The OCPD said a major crackdown will be carried out to deal with reckless drivers.
