The sole survivor of a grisly Kisii road crash that left seven dead last remembers she and her friends screaming.
The Kenyatta University student, identified only as Mercy, said she regained consciousness in hospital, and learned that her friends had died.
She recounted that the group was on the way from Nairobi to Magina in Kisii for a friend’s birthday party.
They reached Kisii town at about 7.30pm when a different person took over the driving, shortly before the accident.
“One of the men took over. I cannot remember anything else. I woke up in hospital,” she said.
The student said those who drove the Toyota Noah car they were travelling in had licences.
Mercy said a second group that had been travelling in a separate car got to the destination.
She said among them were students from KU, Dedan Kimathi, Utalii College, graduates and one who was to join college.
A picture of the girls in the group, all dressed in white for the party, has been shared widely on social media.
Mercy said they took the photograph before the accident and that some of her friends used it for their profiles on social media pages.
The accident occurred on Kisii-Kilgoris road at Etora area, and involved two other vehicles; a canter and a saloon car.
The saloon car was on its way from Ogembo town to Kisii when it collided head-on with the Noah.
The accident is said to have taken place while the driver of the Noah attempted to overtake the canter.
After they collided, the driver of the canter lost control and landed on the Noah smashing it to pieces.
Kisii Governor James Ongwae condoled with the families.
