Mombasa Island was on Monday morning brought to a standstill ahead of the relaunch of Mtongwe Ferry after detectives mounted a major security operation targeting vehicles and pedestrians using Nyali Bridge.

The officers from the Presidential Escort, the flying squad and GSU stopped all vehicles from accessing the bridge amid claims of a plot to block Governor Hassan Joho from accessing the town.

They blocked and held Mr Joho and Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba as they made their way to town on bodabodas.

The officers escorted the governor to his office, where they stood guard before being joined by their colleagues from the Anti-Terror Police Unit.
The Mombasa governor is expected to address a media briefing at his office shortly accompanied with Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir and Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba, among other leaders.

Passengers, including political and business leaders, from the North Coast spent more than three hours in the traffic.
