By next January, number plates issued in Kenya will include security features to deter car theft and deter fraudsters using cars as collateral to acquire loans.
The roll-out – which has been delayed from a planned start in 2015 due to legal wrangling – will start after a tender process for technology that can be used to create “digitised” number plates, including holograms, watermarks, and laser marking, reports Kahawatungu.com.
A system developed by Germany’s EHA Hoffman and Ugandan firm MIG International won a Sch2bn ($20m) tender for the plates, but was put on hold after an appeal by IT company Tropical Technologies, which had earlier been selected.
