Nine people lost their lives on Sunday, November 1, following a grisly accident involving a lorry and a 14-seater matatu.

Kilifi Police Commander Stephen Matu confirmed to Nation that the accident occurred along Kaloleni-Mazeras highway in Bondora, Kilifi.

Witnesses noted that all the passengers aboard the matatu died in the wreckage.

Photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed a completely mangled matatu, with its seats scattered across the roads.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident, with residents trooping to the scene of accident to help any survivors.

The accident comes just weeks after the government raised concerns over a spike in road accidents since President Uhuru Kenyatta opened bars and reduced curfew hours.

statement from NTSA  in October indicated that 2,689 lives were lost between January 1 and September 30, 2020, compared to 2,655 during the same period in 2019, an increase of 1.3 per cent.

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, in the same month, noted that most accidents occurred between November and February, and during festivities.

Mombasa-Nairobi-Nakuru-Kakamega-Kisumu highway was among the most dangerous roads in the country after registering the highest fatalities.

“Time is here for us to be honest with one another… this is going to involve all of us, let us take part in behavioural change campaign.

“Let us educate our people to behave responsibly. That is the only way we are going to deal with road accidents,” urged Matiang’i while launching the National Safe Roads Programme.
