Protesting workers of a Chinese road construction firm in Nakuru caused traffic build-up on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway on Monday morning.

The China Railways Engineering Group construction workers downed their tools in protest over poor pay and harassment by their Chinese supervisor.

The protesters blocked the road at the Soilo-Njoro turnoff, paralysing traffic early morning. They were later dispersed by police.

The Chinese company was awarded the Sh2.7 billion World Bank-funded project by Kenya National Highways Authority for construction of three interchanges along the northern corridor.

The interchanges are being constructed at the Mau Summit, Njoro and Nyahururu turn offs.

The tender was awarded in February and construction works were to be completed in 15 months.
