A motorist who ran over a traffic police officer on the Eastern Bypass, killing him on the spot, has been arrested.
Edward Njoroge, a matatu driver, was reportedly carrying unidentified plastics when he was flagged down by Officer Peter Lukote from the Traffic Department.
According to Lang’ata OCPD Gregory Mutiso, the incident occurred on Tuesday at around 4pm.
Officer Peter Lukote is said to have spotted the 14-seater matatu and signalled the driver to stop.
He was then asked to hand over his driver’s license as the officer held on to the door handle of the matatu.
The suspect allegedly refused to hand over his DL and a tussle ensued.
All of a sudden, the driver engaged his gear and began to drive off.
In the midst of his attempt to flee, he apparently ran over the police officer who had accidentally slipped and fallen on the road.
Unknown to the matatu driver, a vehicle belonging to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had been parked near the scene and a pursuit ensued.
Several other motorists who had witnessed the unfolding drama also began to pursue the matatu driver.
The rogue driver was later arrested in Kikuyu and is to be arraigned at the Milimani law courts on Thursday.
He will face murder charges after the officer succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the Nairobi West Hospital.
A post-mortem examination that was conducted at the Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home confirmed that the officer died from multiple injuries caused by blunt-force trauma.
