This year, 22 vehicles received the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ recognition while 17 were named Top Safety Picks. In the small cars category, the Honda Civic sedan, Mazda3 and Toyota Prius all received the Top Safety Pick+ award while the Ford Fusion, Accord coupe and sedan, Mazda6, Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback claimed the award in the midsize moderately priced category. In the midsize luxury and near luxury cars category, the Infiniti Q50, Lincoln MKZ and Volvo S60 are the safest cars you can buy, but if you’re looking for something more luxurious and larger, the Acura RLX and Volvo S80 were both named Top Safety Pick+.
In the small SUVs category, the Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander and Subaru Forester lead the pack while the Toyota Highlander was the sold midsize SUV to be awarded a Top Safety Pick+. The Acura MDX, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Volvo XC60 were the midsize luxury SUVs to claim the honor and last, but not least, the Honda Odyssey is the only minivan on the market to be a Top Safety Pick+.
As for Top Safety Picks, the Chevrolet Spark was the only car in the minicar category. As for small cars, the Dodge Dart, Ford Focus, Honda Civic coupe, Hyundai Elantra, Scion tC, Subaru Impreza and Subaru XV Crosstrek were named Top Safety Picks in the small cars category. In the midsize moderately priced cars category, it was the Chrysler 200 sedan, Dodge Avenger, Kia Optima, Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Passat. Rounding off the list is the Acura TL in the midsize luxury / near luxury car segment, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport in the small SUV category and the Volvo XC90 for the midsize luxury SUVs.
