Three people died and several others seriously injured in a road accident along Kisumu-Bondo road. The Monday evening accident near Holo trading centre involved two matatus.
According to an eye witness, the driver of the matatu heading to Bondo was trying to overtake a lorry when he rammed into another matatu. Kisumu police boss John Mwinzi said one of the passengers died instantly while the two others died on their way to the hospital.
Three of those injured were admitted at New Nyanza Provincial Hospital at the intensive care unit while others were treated and discharged. “One passenger arrived in critical condition and passed away a few minutes later while one woman is in serious condition,” he said.
Mwinzi called on drivers to stop speeding and be careful on the highway especially at this time when the number of vehicles is high. The accident caused a big traffic snarl up. It took police and members of the public over an hour to remove a body trapped in the mangled wreck.
The wrecks were later towed to Holo police station while the bodies were taken to the local mortuary. The one who died instantly is an administrator at the University of Nairobi Kisumu Campus who was on duty bound from Bondo with a colleague who sustained minor injuries.
