The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has swung into action and suspended a driver of a matatu that was captured being driven carelessly in a viral video on social media.
In the undated clip, a Nissan matatu registration number KCU 578P belonging to Naekana Sacco is seen overtaking carelessly and almost hitting another oncoming vehicle that captured the incident on camera.
Although it is not clear the route the vehicle was plying, Naekana Sacco is known for ferrying passengers along the Kajiado-Namanga route.
“The driver appeared before the Authority today. Following this, his class A endorsement and driving license have been suspended. He will be required to undergo a driver retest to confirm his competencies.The Sacco has also suspended him for three months. We thank the public for speaking out,” said NTSA in a Twitter post.
The incident came at a time when the nation is experiencing considerably high number of road accidents across the country.
In 2018, over 3,146 lost their lives on the road as up to December 30, 2018, compared to 2,875 who died by the same date in 2017 according to date from the Authority.
In the month of December 2018, over 350 people lost their lives in road accidents.
Another report that was released on Tuesday, October 16, showed a total 2,735 people died on separate road accidents between January 7 to October 7, 2019.
The figures are expected to rise especially in the month of December when people shall be travelling to spend holiday with their families.
Pedestrians and motorists have been urged to use the roads carefully and drive safely to avoid any accidents.
