Police arrest driver of Kisii school bus that killed four

Police have arrested the driver of a school bus that overturned in Kisii on Friday, killing four students.

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Director-General Francis Meja identified the driver of the bus belonging to St Mary’s Nyamagwa Girls High School as Mr Erick Gituma Muthenya, an employee of Associated Motors.

“He is in custody at Ogembo Police Station as police officers and the NTSA join hands in conducting investigations into the incident,” read a statement released by the agency.

Kisii County Police Commander Agnes Mudambah said the driver is due to record a statement over the accident in which four female students died.

She said the driver was likely to face various charges, including causing death by dangerous driving.

DANGEROUS DRIVING

NTSA’s deputy director Benjamin Kibogong said the driver was speeding and the bus was overloaded, making him lose control at a sharp Nyambunde bend.

Twenty students involved in the accident are still under observation at the Kisii Level 6 Hospital, according to a statement by Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang.

The hospital discharged three students on Saturday evening.

One student, who was referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret, is still under observation.

“The ministry condoles with the families, friends and relatives of four girls who lost their lives in the accident,” said Dr Kipsang in the statement.
