At least 148 vehicles were impounded Tuesday during an operation targeting those flouting traffic rules along the Narok-Bomet highway.
The crackdown, organised by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Disaster Management Unit, was meant to bring back order on the country’s roads amid increased accidents in recent weeks.
Rift valley Regional NTSA boss Joseph Gichohi says the authority remains committed to enhancing safety on the country’s roads by dealing decisively with rogue motorists.
Speaking during the operation, National Disaster Management Unit Deputy director Dr Duncan Ochieng said similar operations will be conducted across the country over the festive season.
According to Ochieng, the vehicles were impounded after they were found to be unroadworthy while some of the drivers failed to produce requisite documents.
Narok north sub county Police commander Fredrick Siundu say his department plans to fully implement traffic regulations and enhance compliance along the busy highway with high traffic of persons travelling from Nairobi to rural areas expected to rise sharply over the festive season.
This even as he called on Kenyans to report those flouting traffic regulations to authorities to ensure appropriate action is taken against them.
His sentiments were echoed by Narok county Traffic base commander Jane Nyaga who cautioned drivers to be cautious and comply with traffic regulations.
