A matatu driver in Mandera South this week saved the lives of eight people after his brave act helped them escape from the hands of suspected terrorists.

Reports indicate that he was driving along the Elwak-Borehole 11 road on Wednesday when around 10 people waved him to stop.

Suspecting that something was amiss, the driver sped off and the suspected Al-Shabaab militants fired at the matatu, deflating a tyre in the process.

Mandera County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha confirmed the incident saying no one was injured.

“A vehicle ferrying construction workers from Borehole 11 was last evening targeted by suspected Al-Shabaab militants but their driver saved them,” he said.

The vehicle had been hired by a construction company that is building a health centre in the area to ferry workers to Elwak town.

Kyatha believes the attack was meant to target the non-locals who were in the matatu.

“The driver is a local but most of the passengers were non-locals whom we believe were the target.

“The attackers shot at the vehicle but no one was injured,” he said.
