A section of Murang’a County residents scrambled to loot alcoholic drinks after a pick-up ferrying liquor was involved in an accident along the Maragua-Muranga Road on Saturday, September 26.

According to eye-witnesses, the pick-up is said to have been involved in a head-on collision with a speeding lorry from a quarry in Murang’a Town.

Residents quickly run at the scene and started scrambling for the drinks, oblivious of the injured man.

“One person died on the spot and another was seriously injured. However, instead of helping the injured, residents were busy scrambling for drinks,” Thomas Njoroge, a witness stated.

Due to the impact from the accident, several bottles were crushed and people had to sort through them to find those that were still intact.

At the time of publishing, police officers had not arrived at the scene.

Njoroge pleaded with the government to add bumps on the road and decried that up to three accidents had been witnessed since the year begun.

“There’s a quarry nearby and so there are numerous lorries that ply this route, most of them are very old and their brakes may become faulty abruptly,” he stated.

As of August 2020, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) raised an alarm over increased road fatalities especially with pedestrians, motorcycle riders and pillion passengers, being the largest number of casualties.

The government is stiffening measures to reduce road accidents in the country to ensure a reduced loss of life.

As part of the measures, the government launched the Nurse in Hand Highway Emergency Response Centre at Delamare, Naivasha.

Nurse in Hand is a mobile and web-based accident and emergency response platform that alerts registered paramedics found within the geo-mapped area as well as classified hospitals in case of an accident.
