Authorities in Makueni County will erect roadblocks along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on the census nights to ensure travellers are enumerated.

The special enumerators will stop every vehicle plying the highway to obtain details of people in transit.

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), Makueni has 2986 enumerators, 496 Content Supervisors and 54 ICT officers.

Makueni County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed said the barriers will be at different towns during the August 24/25 exercise.

The National Population and Housing Census exercise is conducted after 10 years and requires everyone to be counted wherever they spend the referenced night.

Addressing reporters,  Maalim said that they had settled on Salama, Emali and Mtito-Andei town for the roadblocks.

“There will be roadblocks so that even truck drivers have their details captured together with other travellers,” Maalim saidThe move is likely to cause heavy traffic jams.

On security concerns; the county boss said that they will be deploying police officers to accompany the enumerators who will be covering areas prone to human-wildlife conflict.

These areas include: Kiboko, Mikululo, Kalembe Raha, Kiu, Kaunguni and Muuni in Makindu sub-county.

In Kibwezi sub-county, the officers will be deployed to Kikunduku, Nthongoni, Kathekani, parts of Masongaleni and areas that border Tsavo East and Chyullu national parks.

Drinking joints have not been spared.Bar owners have been directed to close their businesses at 6 pm and if anyone wishes to drink that night, they have been advised to have ‘take away’.

According to Maalim, anybody who will defy this government directive will be arrested.
