Over 100 matatus have been impounded for illegal parking within the Central Business District (CBD).

The Thursday morning crackdown was carried out on Latema Street, Moi Lane, Tom Mboya Street, Gill House area and Munyu Road respectively.

The dropping and picking of passengers in undesignated areas by matatu operators is the biggest cause to traffic snarl up in the city centre.

“We have put the rogue Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) operators on notice that we are not going to allow them to break the laws. Some of these individuals are careless in the way they do their work. This is a Capital City and sanity must prevail,” said Tom Tinega, Nairobi County Parking Services Director.

Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko had two weeks ago vowed to crack down on City Hall officials who have been creating illegal matatu termini in return for kickbacks.

“We have noted with concern that many PSVs are parking, dropping and picking passengers at undesignated areas within the CBD. We must, therefore, bring order in this county by ensuring that all the PSVs operators observe the county laws,” said Sonko.

Last month, City Hall had issued a notice warning matatus against picking up and dropping off passengers at non-gazetted locations in the city centerP.
