The long wait is over. Jaguar has unveiled the F-Type Coupe and with it a range-topping ‘R’ variant, which gives the British carmaker serious ammunition to take on both the Porsche Cayman and 911.
The closed-roof variant of the delicious F-Type roadster maintains the two supercharged V6s from the convertible that offer 335 hp and 375 hp, but the cabrio’s 488-hp V8S is replaced with a 542-hp V8R that packs the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 residing in the Jaguar XFR-S sedan.
The F-Type R will get from 0-60 mph in four seconds and do 186 mph flat out. It will also sprint from 50 to 75 mph in 2.4 seconds, handy for freeway overtaking. All three F Coupes come with ZF’s eight-speed transmission, and judging by this video have a soundtrack that will terrify small children.
As you’d expect of a top tier model, the V8R comes with plenty of performance-oriented goodies, including a stiffer suspension, adaptive dynamics, a new electronic active differential and torque vectoring system. A fixed roof, available in aluminum, glass or carbon, also adds stiffness. In fact, the F Coupe is the most torsionally rigid Jaguar ever built. Surprisingly, the Coupe is only 20 kg lighter than the Roadster, however, 21 kg can be shaved by opting for the carbon ceramic ‘CCM’ brakes, which come with 20-inch ‘Storm’ wheels in either satin grey anthracite or gloss black/diamond-tuned finish.
Without a cumbersome folding roof, the F-Type Coupe can also swallow up two sets of golf clubs, which is how sports car manufacturers measure trunk space these days.
