Did You Know? Mercedes-Benz is globally acknowledged to be the home of motoring innovation, and this is why:

1.The 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen was the world’s first petrol powered car.
2. Daimler invented the honeycomb radiator still used on all water-cooled vehicles today.
3. Mercedes-Benz made the first passenger road car to have brakes on all four wheels in 1924.
4. The “safety cage” or “safety cell” construction with front and rear crumple zones was first developed by Mercedes-Benz in 1951. This is considered by many as the most important innovation in automobile construction from a safety standpoint.
5. Mercedes-Benz invented Traction Control, the mechanism that prevents drive wheels from spinning by intervening at the engine, transmission, or brakes.
6. The 1981 S-Class introduced Airbags to the motoring industry.
7. Mercedes-Benz pioneered a system called Pre-Safe to detect an and prepares the car’s safety systems to respond optimally to an imminent crash. ABS was also developed at Mercedes

Despite the potential to generate billions of dollars in licencing, Mercedes-Benz has not made a large fuss about its innovations, and has even licensed them freely for use by competitors – in the name of improving automobile and passenger safety.
