2013 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will Boast Autonomous Driving System

The 2013 S-Class will feature a glut of new technology to maintain its position ahead of key rivals.

Cutting-edge technology was in abundance at the Frankfurt Motor Show when Mercedes unveiled the F125. However, instead of drivers having to wait a decade to enjoy state-of-the-art innovations, the brand new 2013 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will feature an autonomous driving system. At speeds of up to 25mph, the S-Class will drive itself through slow-moving traffic jams using a series of cameras and radar-based monitoring systems controlling the speed and distance to the vehicle in front. Whilst the S-Class follows a traffic queue, drivers can “concentrate on other things,” according to Mercedes engineer Dr. Stefan Schweher. To ensure the S-Class continues to lead the way in safety and advanced technology, the 2013 model will also feature a new airbag system that deploys under the front axle during emergency braking situations, and a new-generation COMAND interface. The online system pairs with a mobile, offering services such as Google local search and drivers will be able to send pre-determined routes to the sat-nav system direct from Google Maps. “The new S-Class will feature our latest breakthrough in audio technology, bigger, ultra-high-quality display screens and even more premium materials,” said Mercedes systems engineer Peter Ebel.
