Four people among them a child were Friday killed and two others seriously injured after a vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a road accident at Chebole trading centre along Bomet-Sotik highway.

The 3pm accident claimed the three on the spot while another died on arrival at Kaplong Mission Hospital.

Witnesses at the scene said the Nissan which had been hired by the occupants to ferry stationeries was trying to overtake another vehicle when it came head on with an oncoming trailer. All the dead were in the Nissan.

Bomet traffic base commander Daniel Kameta said the driver of the Nissan belonging to Kilgoris Classic transport company was rushed to Kapkatet district hospital where he is admitted in critical condition.

He said a child on board the ill-fated vehicle is admitted at Tenwek Mission Hospital with multiple fractures.

“The child was rushed to Kapkatet hospital but was immediately referred to Tenwek Mission Hospital due to injuries sustained,” said the officer.

The traffic officer said the occupants of the trailer went into hiding immediately after the accident and police have launched a man hunt for them.

“The occupants of the trailer are at large at the moment and we suspect they went into hiding fearing they would be attack at the scene,” Kameta said.

He said the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kapkatet district hospital mortuary.

The victims, Kenyans of Asian origin were transporting Bookshop stationeries ahead of the opening of schools next week.

The traffic officer appealed to commuters plying the route to drive with caution during this season when the roads are busy.

“I appeal to those plying the roads to drive with caution and slowly since our roads are generally busy and to avoid causing more dead,” said Kameta

He also asked drivers on the roads within the region to exercise caution citing numerous deep potholes which he said were posing danger to road users.

“There are numerous potholes on the roads from Mulot all the way to Sotik and they are posing a lot of danger therefore our drivers should be cautious,” he added.
